This is a quote from Aldous Huxley, and it has become my new favorite quote.
I really like the new priority inbox feature in gmail/google apps, but am I the only one so far that is having wrong counts? Or maybe I’m just not following how it is supposed to count them.
Take a look:
The label shows 5 unread messages, but the “Important and unread” area says it has 8. I counted them and there are 8 for sure. While I am writing this it changed so the label says 10 and “Important and unread” shows 13 with 13 real messages.
So what’s up with the label number being off?
Its nice to get a lot of traffic to your site, and its even cooler to get it from a popular source like twitter, facebook, stumbleupon, digg, etc because it means people are paying attention to what you’re doing. They might not like it, but they’re talking about it.
The problem with a traffic spike like that though, is that unless your server has lots of resources in reserve, the site can slow to a crawl or even crash the web server.
If you have more than one site and they’re all on the same server, now all your other stuff just went down too.
Sure, you could get a bigger, badder, faster server but that might not be cost effective unless you’re sustaining a higher level of traffic.
Rather than consolidating, it makes sense to spread the risk over multiple servers. At least that’s what I’m thinking right now, cause one of my servers is getting hammered.
I was recently handed a Mac for some projects and I’ve been trying to figure out the best backup system for it. I won’t get into whether I like Mac’s better than PC’s but I do have to say that there seem to be quite a lot more options for PC backup than Mac backup out there, especially for the online backup variety and I am struggling on whether I want to just pick up external Mac backup drive or go for the online backup option.
I’ve been a very happy Mozy user for years with the Windows boxes, so I got that set up, but I would still like to hear about what other providers people use. I’ve not tried Carbonite yet, and iDisk seems like a joke to me.
Anyone have any thoughts on a good Mac backup solution?

At least you can try to do something about it, rather than sit and twiddle your thumbs waiting for it to come back up
The idea of blogging has lately seemed like more of a chore than anything, so I decided I’ll change the design a bit and installed WP’s blog app on my phone to see if I can’t make it a bit more enjoyable. We’ll see.
I got these in an email. Apparently these posters are supposed to be glued to the outside of your garage door so passer-by’s can see what appears to be the inside of your garage. I guess they’re from Germany or something. Nifty idea. The jet with the folded wings is my favorite.
