24 Dollars a Year to Save the Earth
Mika
For about $2/mo, I signed up for PGE’s Green Source Renewable Energy at my house.According to PGE, “Green Source electricity is approximately 50 percent new wind power, 40 percent new geothermal and 10 percent new biomass (wood waste) power.”
I can’t remember now where I read it, but supposedly by switching to green energy for a year it is almost equal to the typical car owner not driving as far as carbon emissions go. Not sure if there’s any truth to that, but for the small amount extra it costs, this is totally worth it.

I’m testing offline blog editors
Mika
I probably won’t have much use for an offline blog editor for my own site, but I can see it being valuable in other scenarios. There’s always some quirks, and I’m just testing out a few to see how they work.
Zoundry: Works okay, both on my own and on some work sites. A little clunky to use.
Windows Live Writer: Works fine on my own, but won’t connect to work stuff because the SSL certificate is self-signed. That’s a bit of a pain. It also wraps stuff like paragraphs in HTML code which I have mixed feelings on.
Neither works all that well with custom tagging systems, although Live Writer allows you to set a custom tag provider. With some hacking, it could be set up to work okay, but still kind of messy.
Overall, the concept is great. Write what you want to without having to worry about having an internet connection and when you find one, just upload all your posts at once. One thing that sucks though, is that none of the ones I’ve played with allow you to write wordpress pages. Anyone have suggestions on what to try out next?

Goals
Mika
I quickly chatted with Chris earlier today about goals, making list and stuff like that. I’m so not a list person by nature. I see the value in them, and use them all the time, but it’s not something natural to me.
I’m also not the kind of person to set our my goals so officially. But I’m trying something new and making a list of them here, very publicly I guess.
My Goals in Life - in no particular order:
- Sail in the Caribbean - not just a charter boat, but own one for at least a little.
- Fly a helicopter
- Retire by age 45, preferably by 40 and in a tropical setting, or emerging country
- Really figure out how to get good recurring revenue even while retired at 45
- Own a small hotel in a cool travel destination. Building one and then owning it would be even more fun
- Contribute to society in a large way, but probably in a smaller local economy somewhere
- Live greener, be more socially responsible
Of course, there’s lots of little goals in life, so I’m not even going to list those. This list of goals is probably going to keep evolving as I accomplish stuff on here or as my goals change, but that’s what pops into my head now.

Dreaming of a Catamaran and Sailing
Mika
Sailing somewhere warm and tropical for a while - be it a week, a month, a year, a lifetime - sounds really awesome sometimes. I think I’d like a catamaran for the stability and room. I’m going to be making a list of my goals soon, and this is definitely something on the list.
Here’s some pictures of a “Fusion 40″ which looks pretty cool. I don’t know the first thing about sailboats, so this might be a piece of crap, but the lifestyle associated with it seems wonderful, at least in my dreams.

One thing that really impresses me on sailboats is the fact that you need to be very efficient in the use of space, and there are lots of multi-purpose cubbies and such. Chairs conver to tables, etc, and other modular stuff.

Allergies = Sick?
Mika
Yesterday I was feeling terrible. I thought it was due to allergies, but now I’m not so sure, and I’m questioning my ability to tell whether I’m sick or having allergies. That’s probably exaggerating quite a bit, but still makes me wonder.
I was sneezing a ton, runny eyes, stuffed up and draining - the whole bit. That’s all allergy related for sure. I came home early, slept for a while and then just lounged around. By 10pm when I was going back to bed, I was feeling horrid. Fever, chills, achy all over. Really feeling like the flu was coming.
This morning, I felt much better after about 10 hours of sleep. I’m still wondering if having an allergic bout like that led to my body being less resistant to something, and I caught a minor flu bug, or if it was all just happening at the same time and I couldn’t tell.
Human bodies are something else, aren’t they? Marvelous, but yet so complex and fragile too.
